Let the Halloween Tomfoolery Begin!

October 28, 2015

Halloween is a big deal in our house. It's pretty much a month long celebration that involves pumpkin patch trips, thrift store decor bargain hunting, an evolving display of decorations, scary movies, "It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown", a pumpkin party, a ridiculous number of jack-o-lanterns, multiple costume changes, a pioneer cemetery photo shoot, and all sorts of festivities on Halloween ...

Another Fair May Faire

May 5, 2015

May Faire at our Waldorf school is a tradition I look forward to every year to ring in the flowering of the season. The Maypole dance, the flower crowns, the live music, the games booths, the plant sale and the bakery booth have all become interwoven in my experience of May. It can be a big undertaking for the school community and parent volunteers to put on, but it always comes together ...

Flowers in February

February 21, 2015

Apparently I'm not the only one enjoying these February flowers.  The pollinators have noticed them too! The wild honeybees are having a ball at the rosemary bush. It seems that Spring is making her appearance early around here. Buds are popping, flowers are blooming and things are certainly in a buzz. Fingers crossed that we don't get any sneaky late cold snaps, but I am ...

A Winter’s Solstice

December 21, 2014

While taking some quiet moments early this morning to appreciate the shortest day, I came across a favorite quote that I often associate with this time of year and was compelled to share. In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer. ~Albert Camus In the spirit of contemplating darkness and light, I would also like to share this excellent article ...

Welcome

Out here in Oregon, I enjoy the rough-hewn life of a modern homesteader and mountain woman, weaving the outdoors into the fabric of daily life. Whether tending this McKenzie River homestead hearth or a campfire in the backcountry, I find great enjoyment in the work of a sustainable life. Gather around as I share my tales of outdoor adventure, conservation, restoration, land stewardship, wildcrafting, handcrafting, growing food, and keeping chickens. It is my hope to share ideas and inspiration, and strengthen connections with the land and wild places. Read More…
