Green House Got it Going On!

May 27, 2016

Times are still too busy to write much (Big Memorial Day weekend project in the works, and more to come on that soon), but I wanted to post a greenhouse update. The kale, arugula, lettuce and cilantro are all very happy and we are very happy with our salads. The starts are happy too. Basically, build a greenhouse and create all kinds of happiness. That's how it works. Happy planting! ...

The Garden is Planted!

May 24, 2016

The Garden is planted, let the growing begin! (More soon, it is a busy time on the homestead.)   ...

Glass Window Greenhouse

April 19, 2016

As is the story with many DIY-ers, an up-cycled glass window greenhouse project was on my to-do list for years. I started saving a window collection when we moved onto this homestead three years ago, and responded to a few "free window" offers from friends who were updating the windows on their houses. I even found a snazzy antique grange door and stained glass window left here in our barn that I ...

Viva la Nettles!

April 12, 2016

Not to brag or anything, but... My nettle patch is pretty much winning at life right now.  That is all.  ...

Potato Cages

March 2, 2016

When it comes to food, we are often encouraged to try something new. I like to apply the same idea to growing food. It's all food related, right? One of my favorite parts of gardening is trying out new ways to grow things and improving my skills as I go along. I got the nifty idea to build some potato cages this week because we are almost out of storage potatoes and the garden is nowhere near ...

Building a Cordwood Path

February 22, 2016

Cordwood constructions is one of those things I've always read about and wanted to do, but never quite got around to doing. With piles of cedar logs in our yard from the trees we thinned this fall, we decided there were plenty of other kinds of wood we should use for firewood, and started scheming some cordwood projects. A new chicken coop and a forest gazebo/shed were up there on the list, but ...

Nettle Surprise!

February 16, 2016

Look what I found popping up around the compost bins! I planted a stinging nettle patch next to the compost last spring after a couple of failed attempts in other spots around our yard, and was very happy to see them not only surviving, but thriving. It's fun to go out and gather nettles, but when you have them growing in your own yard it is much easier to incorporate them in your regular diet. ...

Greenhouse Updates

February 10, 2016

Our upcycled glass window greenhouse has been coming along, and I am happy to report we made some headway over the weekend and the end of the project is in sight! Over the weekend we built the raised beds, laid out the brick floor, and put up brackets for the seedling benches. I have been wanting a greenhouse like this pretty much all of my life, so this is big excitement around here. We ...

Chaos and Progress

February 8, 2016

We have had both a lot of chaos and a lot of progress around the homestead lately. The two seem to go hand in hand. Last month I wrote a post about all the unfinished works in progress, and as we have cleaned up the mess of felled trees, pruning and things that needed moving; beautiful things are taking shape. This weekend I dug into the task of moving the raised strawberry bed to make room for ...

A Work in Progress

January 14, 2016

Life is a work in progress, and mine has been no exception these last few weeks. There are many projects we are in the middle of around the homestead, and while waiting for one to be completed that I could write a post about, I realized I haven't been writing any posts. Since everything is always a work in progress anyway, I decided to go ahead and show off some of my works in progress. The most ...

Welcome

Out here in Oregon, I enjoy the rough-hewn life of a modern homesteader and mountain woman, weaving the outdoors into the fabric of daily life. Whether tending this McKenzie River homestead hearth or a campfire in the backcountry, I find great enjoyment in the work of a sustainable life. Gather around as I share my tales of outdoor adventure, conservation, restoration, land stewardship, wildcrafting, handcrafting, growing food, and keeping chickens. It is my hope to share ideas and inspiration, and strengthen connections with the land and wild places. Read More…
