Tales of Modern Homesteading and Outdoor Adventure

March 6, 2014

DIY Spring Willow Wreath

The beginning of March is a fine time to begin thinking Spring. Around this time, I always like to pack away my winter decor and get out the birds nests, vases of fresh daffodils and budding twigs, and of course, pussy willows. I’ve made my own evergreen wreaths for the holidays the last few years, and decided to branch out this Spring with a pussy willow wreath for the front door.

I went for a little drive one sunny day last week to a marshy area where I had noticed the willows budding out this time last year. Willows are tough, and can take a little pruning, so I clipped off a basket full of budding twigs and enjoyed the 60 degree weather.

The materials for this project were pretty basic. I bought a wire wreath form for about 3 dollars at the craft store, got out my role of florist wire and clippers, and was ready to go.

I made little bundles of willow twigs and secured them with florist’s wire at each cross section of the wreath frame.

I ended up putting three bundles in a row along each of these lines to really fill it in.

Each set of bundles overlapped until I had gone all the way around the circle and had myself a wreath!

Every time I come home, it feels like a cheery little bit of Spring is greeting me at the front door.

Welcome

Out here in Oregon, I enjoy the rough-hewn life of a modern homesteader and mountain woman, weaving the outdoors into the fabric of daily life. Whether tending this McKenzie River homestead hearth or a campfire in the backcountry, I find great enjoyment in the work of a sustainable life. Gather around as I share my tales of outdoor adventure, conservation, restoration, land stewardship, wildcrafting, handcrafting, growing food, and keeping chickens. It is my hope to share ideas and inspiration, and strengthen connections with the land and wild places. Read More…
