Tales of Modern Homesteading and Outdoor Adventure

November 26, 2012

A Kaleidoscope of Kelp

While I was up on the Olympic Peninsula visiting family, I took my son for a walk on my favorite beach near the mouth of Sequim Bay. I used to go on excursions there with my parents when I was growing up, and have always made a point to stop by and walk along the shore collecting stones and shells when I go back to visit. To me, returning to visit the outdoor places we love, is right up there in importance with visiting the people that are dear to us. On this particular day, I was really inspired by all the fresh, colorful kelp that had washed up on the rocky shore, and delighted in all the different types and textures. I wish my plant ID knowledge extended into the seaweed and kelp realm, but at this point, I’m just appreciating their beauty. It was as though Nature had been having a high time creating works of art with her palette of colors washed in on the waves.

Welcome

Out here in Oregon, I enjoy the rough-hewn life of a modern homesteader and mountain woman, weaving the outdoors into the fabric of daily life. Whether tending this McKenzie River homestead hearth or a campfire in the backcountry, I find great enjoyment in the work of a sustainable life. Gather around as I share my tales of outdoor adventure, conservation, restoration, land stewardship, wildcrafting, handcrafting, growing food, and keeping chickens. It is my hope to share ideas and inspiration, and strengthen connections with the land and wild places. Read More…
