A Mountain Hearth

Tales of Modern Homesteading and Outdoor Adventure

October 27, 2010

If I Could Be Any Tree

If I Could Be Any Tree
If I could be any tree,
If I could be any tree,
If I could be any tree,
An oak is what I’d be.
An oak is what I’d be.
I’d grow so tall and my roots would grow so deep,
And every fall I’d have the brightest leaves.
And if you were a little squirrel,
If you were a little squirrel,
If you were a little squirrel,
You could eat for free.
You could eat for free.
I would give you everything you need,
A place to make your nest and rest your feet.
There’s just one thing I’d ask of you,
One simple thing that you could do.
Dig some holes in the ground,
Plant my acorns all around.
Then when I am dead and gone,
They will grow up tall and strong.
And my spirit will live on,
You will hear it sing my song.
An oak is what I’ll be.
An oak is what I’ll be.

Welcome

Out here in Oregon, I enjoy the rough-hewn life of a modern homesteader and mountain woman, weaving the outdoors into the fabric of daily life. Whether tending this McKenzie River homestead hearth or a campfire in the backcountry, I find great enjoyment in the work of a sustainable life. Gather around as I share my tales of outdoor adventure, conservation, restoration, land stewardship, wildcrafting, handcrafting, growing food, and keeping chickens. It is my hope to share ideas and inspiration, and strengthen connections with the land and wild places. Read More…
