A Mountain Hearth

Tales of Modern Homesteading and Outdoor Adventure

November 15, 2019

Finding Those Moments

Sometimes life gets busy. Busier than you ever thought possible, where you suddenly find that you’re putting all of your energy into just keeping up. The consensus of advice seems to always involve giving yourself small breaks, but it can be hard to figure out what that actually looks like for you as an individual. My greatest success with this as of late has been what I would call “Micro-breaks”. Whether it’s a hot cup of tea, curling up in a soft blanket by the woodstove for an hour at the end of the day, walking outside to look closely at a plant, or dreaming up a future road trip on Pinterest for 10 minutes. On a scale of time, they don’t really seem like substantial breaks, but they seem to do the job of getting me through. I managed to make it out on two hikes earlier in the fall, and on the last one gathered some wild ginger root rhizomes that have held up well in the fridge for those micro-breaks with tea. Leaving a few leaves on for storage seemed to help. The spicy steam never fails to take me back to being out in the woods, where I would so much rather be every day, and reassures me that when I get through this busy time, I’ll be  back out there again.

Also, writing and blogging is obviously not happening very often around here right now, but you can still follow me on Instagram for my “Micro-updates”.

Custom orders are on hold for the time being with Mountain Hearth Handcrafts, but everything else is up-to-date on my Etsy site:

Thanks for taking a moment to share this micro-break with me.

Welcome

Out here in Oregon, I enjoy the rough-hewn life of a modern homesteader and mountain woman, weaving the outdoors into the fabric of daily life. Whether tending this McKenzie River homestead hearth or a campfire in the backcountry, I find great enjoyment in the work of a sustainable life. Gather around as I share my tales of outdoor adventure, conservation, restoration, land stewardship, wildcrafting, handcrafting, growing food, and keeping chickens. It is my hope to share ideas and inspiration, and strengthen connections with the land and wild places. Read More…
